WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
The Jagannath figure session completely changed how I see folk art. Rajni breaks down the character grammar in a way that makes it instantly approachable, even for someone with no background in Indian painting.
I had always been intimidated by Pattachitra because of how intricate it looks, but the way Rajni structures the course makes it genuinely achievable. Starting with outlines and character grammar before moving into figures and compositions was the right approach — by session 5 I was creating Dashavatar mini-paintings with real confidence. The detailing sessions are where the class really shines.
Pattachitra had been on my list for years — I studied art history and always admired the Odisha tradition from a distance, but never thought I could actually paint in the style. Rajni's course changed that completely. The first two sessions alone — learning the outline approach and character grammar — gave me a working vocabulary I could build on immediately. What I particularly valued was how the course alternated between technical practice (borders, fillers, motifs) and figurative work (Jagannath figures, Dashavatar compositions), so neither the discipline nor the creativity felt neglected. The final session, creating a complete narrative Pattachitra masterpiece, was genuinely one of the most satisfying creative experiences I have had. I left with a finished artwork and a deep appreciation for the patience and skill this tradition demands.
